The library

Browse by what actually matters to your program

Five filter dimensions drawn from the structured script metadata in the FreeSchoolPlays engine. No algorithmic guesses: every tag comes from an editorial read of the source text.

Filter by what you need

Five filter dimensions — age band, genre, length, gender flexibility, forensics eligibility — drawn from the structured script metadata in the FreeSchoolPlays engine. Filters return only pieces that actually match; no algorithmic guesses.

Early access

Read the full piece in-browser

Every monologue opens in a clean, single-column reader at monologue.network/monologues, with its context and a performance note. A print layout is built into the page: read it here, print it, or save it as a PDF, no app required. This is live now.

Live now — library + reader

Built on the FreeSchoolPlays catalog

The library surfaces the monologues from the FreeSchoolPlays content engine — original age-tiered pieces for the classroom plus verbatim public-domain classics for auditions and forensics — free to read and free to perform. Monologue.Network organizes them by type; more pieces enter the library through the FSP content engine as the structured data model is completed.

Filter dimensions (early access)

Age band

Elementary (K–5), middle school (6–8), high school (9–12), or all-ages. Every piece carries an age recommendation from the FSP editorial review.

Genre

Comedy, drama, dramatic comedy, verse, classical adaptation, contemporary, or warm-up exercise. Genre tags come from the structured script metadata, not from algorithmic inference.

Length

Under 2 minutes, 2–4 minutes (audition-standard), 4–7 minutes (full), or 7+. Estimated at roughly 150 words per minute from the source text — actual performance time varies with pace and blocking.

Gender flexibility

Fully gender-flexible (works for any performer without rewriting), gender-specific as written, or either (the text specifies gender but adapts cleanly without changing meaning).

Forensics eligibility

Classified for Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Prose, Poetry, Platform, and related events. These classifications are illustrative only and are not official NSDA, NCFL, or UIL certifications. Always verify with your event's published rules before competing.

Audition prep

From the library to an audition packet in minutes

Choose a piece, cut the lines you need, print the packet. Attribution is the only requirement for performing these works — required today and kept lenient and good-faith, and pre-filled automatically into every generated packet as the audition tools open.

Audition-cut selection

Mark start and end lines and the platform generates an audition packet: your selected lines in order, with the cue line from the character before yours so the reader knows where to pick up. The credit line is pre-filled automatically so it is never missing from a printed packet.

Early access

Print to PDF — browser-native

No fake PDF link, no export to an app. The print layout is designed for letter paper with a cover line carrying the full attribution credit. In any browser: File › Print, choose Save as PDF. The result is audition-ready.

Early access

Attribution required — the only ask

The credit line — "by [Author] via FreeSchoolPlays.com" — is required by the live Free School Plays license today, kept lenient and good-faith. It is never optional. As the audition-cut tooling opens (early access), the credit line is pre-filled automatically into every generated packet, PDF, and program export.

Attribution required today (live license term)

Forensics eligibility tags

Every piece carries a forensics classification for Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Prose, Poetry, Platform, and related events. Classifications are illustrative only — not official NSDA, NCFL, or UIL certifications. Always verify with your event's published rules before competing.

For theatre directors & speech coaches

Assignment tools built for the way you actually run auditions

Assign pieces to students by name, see who has read what, receive practice recordings, and surface casting conflicts before they become problems. All in early access — built on the Homeroom student roster and the FreeSchoolPlays engine.

Assign a piece to a student

Send any piece from the library to a named student on your roster. The student sees it in their Homeroom workspace; you see when they have read it and whether they have submitted a practice recording.

Early access

Assign a class set for auditions

Choose a set of pieces for an audition season and share them with the whole class at once. Students self-select from the set; you see who picked what. The cast-fit module runs on the choices, flagging doubling conflicts before you commit to casting.

Early access

Track read status and submissions

See read status, practice recording count, and submission timestamps per student. Designed for a director, not an LMS auditor: a list of names and states, not a grade book.

Early access

Teacher assignment tools require a Homeroom account. Browsing and printing are open without an account and always will be.

The free promise

Free to read, free to rehearse, free to perform.

No royalty. No performance fee. No license required. The only requirement is attribution — a single credit line in your program, audition packet, or public materials. It is required today and enforced leniently, in good faith — and, as the packet tools open, pre-filled automatically so it is never inadvertently missing.

Free to read

Every piece in the library is readable in full, in the browser, at no cost and without creating an account. No paywall, no excerpt-only preview, no "sign in to continue."

Free to rehearse

Take it to rehearsal. Print it, save a PDF, share it with your cast. No royalty, no per-copy fee, no license required for any rehearsal use. The print function is built in.

Free to perform

No performance fee. No royalty on a ticketed show. Zero. The only requirement is attribution: credit the author and FreeSchoolPlays.com in your program and any public materials. That is it.

Attribution is the only ask

A single credit line — "by [Author] via FreeSchoolPlays.com" — in your program, audition packet, or public materials. Required by the license today and enforced leniently, in good faith. As the packet tools open, the credit line is pre-filled automatically so it is never inadvertently missing.

These works are original works by the FreeSchoolPlays founder, published under a free-to-perform attribution license. Pieces sourced from public-domain texts carry a verified provenance record (source URL, publication year, PD rule applied, two-source confirmed). No title publishes without confirmed provenance.

Practice recording · early access · consent-gated for minors

Record a run-through. Keep it in the classroom.

Students record themselves performing a piece. The recording stays inside the classroom workspace — private, teacher-controlled, never public without explicit action from both the student and the teacher. For any minor, depiction consent must be on file before recording begins.

Record a run-through

Students record themselves performing the piece. The recording stays inside the classroom workspace — private to the student and their teacher, never shared publicly without explicit action by both. For any student who is a minor, recording requires completed, revocable depiction consent on file.

Early access · Consent-gated for minors

Teacher-only access by default

Recordings are private to the student and their teacher by default. A student can choose to share with the class; the teacher must also approve before class-wide access opens. The default is always the smallest audience, and it takes action from both sides to widen it.

Early access

Practice recording is in early access. The consent architecture is built: depiction consent is revocable at any time, the gate is enforced in code, and recordings default to the smallest audience. We are building the recording UI now and will open early access to programs that book a demo first.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about the library, the license, and early access

Are these pieces really free to perform?

Yes. No royalty, no performance fee, no license required. Attribution is the only requirement: a credit line — "by [Author] via FreeSchoolPlays.com" — in your program and any public materials. It is required by the license today and kept lenient and good-faith; as the packet tools open, the credit line is pre-filled automatically so it is never inadvertently missing.

What does attribution look like in practice?

A single line in the program or audition packet: "[Title], by [Author] via FreeSchoolPlays.com." As the packet tools open (early access), the platform pre-fills it into every generated packet, PDF, and program export. For a performance without a printed program, include it in a verbal introduction or announcement.

Are the forensics eligibility classifications official?

No. The classifications — Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Prose, Poetry, Platform, and related event types — are illustrative only and are not official NSDA, NCFL, or UIL certifications. Rules vary by region, district, and season. Always verify the current eligibility rules with your specific event's official published rulebook before entering a piece in competition.

How many pieces are in the library right now?

The FreeSchoolPlays catalog — the source library — currently contains seven published works — original scripts plus Chris's own public-domain adaptations — including two standalone monologue pieces: The Red Monologue and The Red Monologue 2.0. Character monologues from the other five plays are being extracted and tagged as the structured data model is completed. More works are added continuously through the FSP content engine.

Are there pieces for younger students?

Yes. The FSP catalog includes works for students across the K–12 range. The age-band filter (Elementary K–5, Middle School 6–8, High School 9–12) lets you narrow to the right level. Some pieces are tagged all-ages and are appropriate for any grade.

How does practice recording work for minors?

Practice recording is in early access. For any student who is a minor, recording requires completed, revocable depiction consent from a parent or guardian on file. The gate is enforced in code — no consent means no recording. Recordings are private to the student and their teacher by default and are never shared publicly without explicit action from both the student and the teacher. Consent can be withdrawn at any time.

Do I need a Homeroom account to use the library?

The library and the reader are open — no account required to browse, read, or print. Teacher assignment tools, practice recording, and classroom tracking are early-access features that tie into the Homeroom platform and require an account. We are building these now.

Can directors or teachers submit their own monologues?

An author-submission portal is on the FreeSchoolPlays roadmap. When it opens, submitted pieces will go through an editorial review and, where applicable, a public-domain provenance check before publishing. We will announce when submissions open.
