Okay. For the record. Because somebody in this house needs to say it. (to the mirror, as if it is Ellie) Ellie. Ellie, you said a hot dog is a sandwich. In front of the whole lunch table. And I froze. I just sat there holding a milk carton like a fool while you dismantled me. But I've had some time. Seventy-two hours. And I have thoughts now.
(pacing, warming up) A sandwich requires two separate pieces of bread. Two. That's the whole architecture of a sandwich. A hot dog bun is ONE piece of bread with a structural crisis in the middle. It's a taco that went to a different school. That's -- (beat) that's actually really good. Why did that come to me now? Why not Tuesday? Where were you, brain, on Tuesday, when I needed you, at the table, in front of Ellie?
(building) And then -- and THEN -- she goes, "By your logic a wrap isn't a sandwich either," like that's a gotcha. And Tuesday-me said, and I quote, "Uh." That's what I said. "Uh." Like a doorbell. (now, triumphant) But what I should have said -- what I am saying now, into this mirror, at nine forty at night -- is: correct, Ellie. A wrap is ALSO not a sandwich. I'm not afraid of that. I'll take the wrap down too. I'll take them all down. I have a whole framework.
(a knock, or an imagined interruption -- deflating) ...What? No, I'm not talking to anyone. I'm -- reviewing. (beat, to himself) I'm reviewing.
(quieter, the truth) The dumb part is, I don't even care about the hot dog. I care that she looked at me like I was slow. Ellie's my oldest friend. She's the one person I always used to be able to keep up with, and lately she's just... faster. And I hate that I sat there. (beat) I hate that I said "uh." (gathering himself, back to the mirror, softer now) ...I'm gonna text her. Not about the hot dog. Just -- to talk. (beat) But I'm keeping the taco line. That line's mine forever.

Start with the objective
Before you run it, name your character's objective in one sentence: what do they want in this moment, and what is in the way of getting it easily? Pace, volume, and movement all follow from that one sentence, not the other way around.
Map the beats
The current text breaks into 5 spoken beats. Use those breaks as a starting map, but test each one: a beat ends where the character's tactic changes, not merely where the paragraph does -- two paragraph-breaks may play as a single acting beat, or one may split into two.

Layer subtext on top of a plain objective: name what the character wants, then find at least one tactic change mid-piece (asking becomes demanding, joking becomes pleading). Ground it in one specific, sensory detail rather than a general mood.
